Sharks started the season in fine form with an exciting, hard fought victory over a Claygate team who had won their opening game of the season 5-0 the previous week. In an even first half Claygate had the better of the opening stages, enjoying territorial dominance but creating little in the way of clear cut chances, with Ali demonstrating superb timing in the challenge at centre-back for the day. Sharks had gained a foothold in the game when Claygate took the lead from a corner, one of their players getting the final touch on a loose ball and prodding over the line from close range. At the other end the Sharks attack was beginning to cause concerns for the home defence. A couple of half chances went begging after good work down the wings before Claygate scored an own-goal after a mix-up between defender and goal-keeper.
In the second half Sharks kept up the pressure, winning the 50-50 challenges and keeping the momentum going forward. The home supporters noticed how Josh was increasingly controlling the midfield, and Francis was a constant threat with his pace and direct running. Eventually, the second goal came, Ben put an excellent cross in from a corner and Rory powered a header into the corner of the net. As the clock ticked down Claygate overloaded their attack, desperately searching for an equaliser but with some great goal-keeping from Jayden and resolute defending from the whole team, the Sharks held out for a fantastic victory.
